Commercial High School

Commercial High School was founded by Corinne Stanton Williams Douglas in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. It began as a department of Girls High School in 1889 for girls who wanted to learn skills they could use in Atlanta's burgeoning business community. Students studied bookkeeping and typing, in addition to mathematics and history courses.〔''The Selected Papers of Jane Addams: vol. 1: Preparing to Lead, 1860-81'', edited by Mary Lynn Bryan, Barbara Bair, Maree de Angury. University of Illinois Press (November 8, 2002) p 218 ISBN 0252027299〕 The school soon expanded into new space, a four-story brick building at 138 Pryor Street in downtown Atlanta.
In 1910, school superintendent William F. Dykes made Commercial High Atlanta's first co-educational high school.〔"WILLIAM F. DYKES, 72, ATLANTA EDUCATOR; Ex-Superintendent of Schools". ''New York Times'', September 18, 1943 p17〕 Like Girls High, Commercial High had its own bank.〔"Gaines Tells of Banks In Atlanta High Schools". ''Atlanta Constitution'', July 27, 1922〕
The school closed in June 1947.〔Eric Stirgus, "Commercial High reunion attracts alumni from school closed since '47". ''The Atlanta Journal - Constitution'' (Ga ), 11 May 2003: C.1.〕
